For generating a homogeneous magnetic field and for determining the Helmholtz configuration. The apparatus consists of a pair of coils arranged parallel to each other on a stable metal base plate, with a holder for a magnetic field probe for measuring the magnetic field. One coil and the holder are mounted so they can be repositioned. The coils can be connected in parallel or in series. The base plate has two printed scales for reading the coil spacing and the lateral displacement of the probe from the coil axis.
